I’ve always liked Photographer Mary Walton. She’s one of those sweet people who’s easy going and very easy to be around. But I didn’t realize until last Saturday how much I enjoyed her.

Mary is a writer I met through Romance Writers Ink. And most recently, she’s become a photographer extraordinaire!

Having a camera in my hand since I got my first red plastic one when I was ten, when I read that Mary had gone into the picture business, I had a great idea. “Let’s have her speak to RWI!”

So I presented my idea to the board. “Authors are always needing head shots. Mary can tell us how to dress for them. Tell us about make up. What we should be doing. Even give us hints for doing our own shots, which many authors do.”

The board was all for it, so I set it up. And I got way more than I bargained for.

Mary had a very professional presentation ready to go. She entertained us. Made us laugh. She taught us, gave us great hints we can use even if we don’t use her service.

She brought her equipment and did head shots for the women who wanted them. Our beautiful Linda Trout was first up, and like a professional model, made the rest of us feel like kids getting ready for school pictures.

I asked if I could swipe someone else’s picture and put my name on it. No one would let me. :-)

Mary, though, made the difference. Somehow, through her lens, lighting and insight, she made each of us look like a million bucks. Make that a trillion. She shadowed what wasn’t perfect and played up what was good, making it even better.

And after she took a shot, she’d look at it on the back of her camera. If it was good, she “aaaah!” or suck in her breath as if she were surprised that something so perfect landed in her camera. That, in turn, made most of us feel a little easier sitting there, dipping one shoulder and smiling (or not smiling) at the camera.

I’m soooo excited about seeing everyone’s shots! Check out Mary’s work. She does a fantastic job!
